The UAlberta WIC group invites you to join us for a meet and greet session in the chemistry lounge (E4-43) with Dr. Tabitha Wood on Monday, Nov 27 at 10:00am… just in time for your morning coffee! In this informal discussion, you will get the chance to talk to Dr. Wood about her experiences in science. Everyone is welcome to participate in the discussion while enjoying complimentary cookies and coffee.
The UAlberta Women in Chemistry is excited to announce our very first Industry Panel Discussion with researchers from Gilead Sciences, Inc. Please join us on Nov 30 in E3-25 at 10 am. Our program will include a short presentation, followed by a Q&A session. Complimentary cookies and coffee will be served.
In the meantime, meet our panelists:
Erica Tiong is a Sr Research Scientist I in Process Research & Development and has been working at Gilead for 6 years. Erica completed her B.Sc., Chemistry (Honours) and Mathematics (Minor) degree at the University of British Columbia and a Ph.D. in Organic chemistry at McGill University. Her Ph.D. studies examined the stereoselective formation of quaternary carbon centers
Ho-Yan Sunis a Research Scientist I and has been working at Gilead Alberta for approximately 2.5 years. Prior to starting her career at Gilead, she completed a B.Sc. in biopharmaceutical sciences and M.Sc. in chemistry at the University of Ottawa with Prof. Keith Fagnou, and then moved to Edmonton to complete her Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Alberta with Prof. Dennis Hall.
Philippa Payne is a Research Scientist I in the Commercial API Process Optimization group at Gilead. She has been working at Gilead for 1.5 years following a Post-doctoral position at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She completed her Ph.D. in organometallic chemistry at the University of British Columbia.
Vinci Hung is a Research Scientist I in the Analytical Chemistry department at Gilead and has been working at Gilead for 2 years. She completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Toronto after which she worked for Health Canada in the Drug Analysis department, working in conjunction with Toronto Police.
As our retreat planning unfolds, we are happy to begin introducing the talented individuals who will join us for this engaging 2-day program.
Our first panelist is an award winning Undergraduate Organic Chemistry Laboratory Director – Dr. Hayley Wan from the University of Alberta. Dr. Wan began her chemistry career at Manchester Metropolitan University, England, where she completed a B.Sc. in chemistry and biology. Discovering she favoured chemistry, she pursued a Master of Philosophy at the University of Manchester in the area of organic chemistry. This was followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in the group of Professor Andy Whiting at the University of Durham, where she studied water tolerant asymmetric catalysis of Diels-Alder reactions.
Upon graduation, she joined the group of Professor Fred West at the University of Alberta, Canada where she completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship. She then took a position with the National Research Council of Canada as a Technical Officer before returning to academia as a Research Associate in the area of lipid chemistry and bio-based materials.
In 2009, Dr. Wan joined the University of Alberta Chemistry Department as the Director of Undergraduate Organic Chemistry Laboratories. Since then, her inspirational mentoring has affected thousands of undergraduate students and graduate teaching assistants. Her efforts have been recognized with several awards, including the Faculty of Science Service Award at the 2015 Celebration of Excellence in Teaching and Research and the Instructor of the Month award in April 2017.
In her spare time, Dr. Wan can be found in her art studio, embarking on various outdoor adventures, or taking off in her single engine fixed-wing aircraft.
Join us to hear more about her path to a career in chemistry on May 26 & 27, 2018!
Join us for a fun evening of cross stitching and camaraderie with fellow members of the Women in Chemistry Group. No prior knowledge is necessary, as we will have an instructor present to teach all the beginners! Registration fee includes workshop kit, an instructor, and some light snacks.
The UAlberta Women in Chemistry group invites you to join us for a Q and A session in the chemistry lounge (E4-43) with Dr. Lara Mahal on Thursday, Sep 14 at 3:30. In this informal discussion, you will get the chance to interact with Dr. Mahal in a more relaxed setting. Everyone is welcome to participate in the discussion while enjoying complimentary cookies and coffee.
We are happy to announce that UAlberta Women in Chemistry will be hosting a satellite meeting to the 101st Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition. This retreat is an initiative started by Dr. Laurel Schafer, UBC Chemistry, and expanded on by the Women in Chemistry, Toronto Chapter. We hope LOGIC, Leaders Overcoming Gender Inequality in Chemistry, will attract young researchers as well as veterans in the field. We wish to bridge the gap between students and career mentors through a showcase of panelists and workshops. We will also feature opportunities for networking, along with a keynote speaker and evening banquet.
Stay tuned for more information about the event, which will be posted on our webpage. If you would like to support our initiative or have suggestions for what you would like included in our program, please contact our organization committee.
Women in Chemistry at the University of Alberta is a new initiative which aims to celebrate and showcase leading women in science, while addressing the lack of diversity and the challenges female researchers face in and outside of academia. Through a series of meet and greets and professional development workshops, we hope to create a platform for fruitful discussions and positive role models. We invite you to join our group and the discussion.
